The second instance occurred on 31 July 2007. Adult males JL (left) and KT (right) performing handclasp grooming at Bulindi (May 2007) The bout lasted 49 seconds (Video 1, available online at /PAN/18_2/18(2)_03.html). Once extended, KT’s wrist appeared supported by JL’s wrist (Figure 2a). Video analysis indicated that JL initiated or facilitated the bout by momentarily taking hold of KT’s right forearm at elbow and wrist and gently pushing upwards (Figure 2b). At 0818 they raised their right arms overhead and performed the wrist-to-wrist variant of GHC (Figure 2a). When he sat JL began grooming him after several minutes they groomed mutually. At 0808 KT climbed on the log and stood glaring at us with erect hair. After approximately two minutes, JL and MR began self-grooming while monitoring us a third male (JK) was peeping from behind the log. However, on this occasion the males did not threaten us. Previous short-range encounters with chimpanzees generated alarm and agitation, usually accompanied by threats from adult males 7. Two males immediately climbed down behind the log while two (JL and MR) remained in view, staring with hair erect. Four adult males were seated on a rotting log, 27 m distant. At 0736 on we followed chimpanzee vocalizations to a clearing in heavily logged forest. Two instances of GHC were observed in which the identity of participants was confirmed. It occurs in more study communities than not (whether present, habitual or customary), yet is notably absent at three long-term sites: Bossou (Guinea), Gombe (Tanzania), and Budongo (Uganda) 4,5. GHC has a patchy distribution across Africa. The behavior may originate from branch-clasp grooming-a universal behavior in chimpanzees 4-in which participants grasp an overhead branch whilst grooming socially 1. Variant forms include one participant grasping their partner’s hand or wrist, and ‘wrist-to-wrist’ in which participants rest their wrists against each other’s forearm, usually one partner supporting most of the weight of both 2,3. The resulting configuration is strikingly symmetrical. It occurs when two chimpanzees seated opposite one another clasp hands overhead and groom each other’s underarm with their free hand. ![]() The grooming hand-clasp (GHC) was the first documented social custom in wild chimpanzees 1. It should be noted that the latter claim has never been verified, although this was E’Cas’s second time standing in for Michael, his first being Remember the Time. However, an alternative suggestion is that Michael fell out with director David Fincher during the filming and so chose to distance himself from the filming and sent E’Cas in his place. Reportedly due to tour commitments, Michael did not appear in the full video and used impersonator E’Casonova for cut away shots in the back of the car and on the sofa. The short film sees Michael in a relationship with a high-class call girl, something unbeknownst to him, and follows the demise of their love and her bizarre lifestyle. The accompanying short film was a work of cinematic brilliance directed by David Fincher who went on to become famous for Fight Club. Initially released in 1992, Who is it served as the 5th single from the Dangerous album and hit the market 2 months after the beginning of the Dangerous World Tour. Who Is It tended to fair a lot better than Give In To Me, benefiting from 2 releases and 2 short films. But the case remains, tracks 9 & 10 are destined to be hidden gems. ![]() ![]() Such a revelation is surprising considering at a time, Dangerous outsold Bad and was Michael’s second biggest selling album of all time at the time. Furthermore, it scored a number two in Britain and charted in over 15 countries overall. And “Give In to Me” was in fact issued as a single from that project, but only in Europe and Oceania.īut where it was released it proved quite successful, which included topping music charts in Ireland, Poland and New Zealand. “Dangerous” was officially released by Epic Records on 26 November 1991. Slash, of Guns N’ Roses’ fame – who also played guitar on “Black or White”, another of the songs from the Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” album – also does so on this track. Additionally, Slash officially collaborated with the King of Pop on a couple of songs he dropped in later years. The video was filmed in Munich, one of the biggest cities in Germany, just as Jackson was about to embark on his Dangerous World Tour. In order to eliminate wide variations in pronunciation, posters illustrating the pronunciation desired are available from the ICAO. The pronunciation of the words in the alphabet as well as numbers may vary according to the language habits of the speakers. Without proper rendering support, you may see question marks, boxes, or other symbols instead of Unicode characters. This article contains IPA phonetic symbols. In English versions of the alphabet, like that from ANSI or the version used by the British armed forces and emergency services, one or both may revert to their standard English spelling. Juliett is spelled with a tt for native French speakers because they may treat a single final t as silent. The English and French spelling alpha would not be properly pronounced by speakers of some other languages whose native speakers may not know that ph should be pronounced as f. Alfa is spelled with an f as it is in most European languages. In most versions of the alphabet, the non-English spellings Alfa and Juliett are found. ![]() English is not required domestically, thus if both parties to a radio conversation are from the same country, then another phonetic alphabet of that nation's choice may be used. Most of the words are recognizable by native English speakers because English must be used upon request for communication between an aircraft and a control tower whenever two nations are involved, especially when they have different languages. The phonetic alphabet is now also defined in other unclassified international military documents. Nevertheless, a NATO unclassified version of the document is provided to foreign, even hostile, militaries, even though they are not allowed to make it publicly available. However, ATP-1 is marked NATO Confidential (or the lower NATO Restricted) so it is not publicly available. The name NATO phonetic alphabet became widespread because the signals used to facilitate the naval communications and tactics of the United States and NATO have become global. Because the latter allows messages to be spelled via flags or Morse code, it naturally called the code words used to spell out messages by voice its "phonetic alphabet". The alphabet's common name (NATO phonetic alphabet) arose because it appears in Allied Tactical Publication ATP-1, Volume II: Allied Maritime Signal and Maneuvering Book used by all allied navies in NATO, which adopted a modified form of the International Code of Signals. In practice these are very rarely used, as they frequently lead to more confusion between speakers of different languages. NATO uses the regular English numeric words (Zero, One, with some alternative pronunciations), whereas the IMO provides for compound numeric words (Nadazero, Unaone, Bissotwo.). The same alphabetic code words are used by all agencies, but each agency chooses one of two different sets of numeric code words. It is a subset of the much older International Code of Signals (INTERCO), which originally included visual signals by flags or flashing light, sound signals by whistle, siren, foghorn, or bell, as well as one, two, or three letter codes for many phrases. International AdoptionĪfter the alphabet was developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) (see history below) it was adopted by many other international and national organizations, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). ![]() The paramount reason is to ensure intelligibility of voice signals over radio links. Instead, the NATO alphabet assigns code words to the letters of the English alphabet acrophonically ( Alfa for A, Bravo for B, etc.) so that critical combinations of letters (and numbers) can be pronounced and understood by those who transmit and receive voice messages by radio or telephone regardless of their native language, especially when the safety of navigation or persons is essential. Though often called "phonetic alphabets", spelling alphabets have no connection to phonetic transcription systems like the International Phonetic Alphabet. The NATO phonetic alphabet, more formally the international radiotelephony spelling alphabet, is the most widely used spelling alphabet. FAA radiotelephony phonetic alphabet and Morse code chart. |
