I am using win xp, office 2003, outlook express and a whole buch of programs from that time that do all I want and need. If others like to change things around every year fine for them but I am not doing it. And if I am forced to learn a lot of new software from scratch I will probably use the computer less and less. Well, fifteen years later I am still managing and if I can I will continue until the day I die. A few years into using Outlook Express I was told I needed to change OS and email client. By the time I learn anything I am told it is already obsolete and I need to start learning something new. Updating hardware and software is exactly what I hate to do and what I do not want to do. Likely as not, it's a good time right now to upgrade your hardware. I don't know if they still make a 32 bit version, though. ![]() Wed 4:39 pm But if you really must have a local client, why not just take this opportunity to switch to something current, like Thunderbird? It's native for GNU+Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. I assume Stunnel can listen on the same ports and forward to the same server and ports?Īnd, why is Stunnel trying to contact 74.125.133.108 which appears to be Google? The final server only requires my account password while it seems Stunnel is working with some kind of certificates.Īt this point when I try to check mail I get a pop-up saying 127.0.0.1 requires username and password and even though I give the correct ones for Hotmail it does not work.ĭoesn't Stunnel just take the account name and password and forward them to the server? And do I somehow need to set the encryption Stunnel uses or is that set automatically?Īt this point I want to get one account going but once I do that I will have other Hotmail accounts. So I set the Hotmail account in OE to connect to 127.0.0.1:110 with no encryption and Stunnel will forward to I just modified the example that comes with Stunnel. This seems extremely complicated for me but I really would like to keep using OE if at all possible. Is there a proxy out there which will do the same thing for me without having to run a proxy myself? I think this would be the ideal solution if possible. Is this correct? Can this proxy be installed in the same machine or does it need to go in another machine? If it needs to go in another machine I was thinking of installing it in my Linux machine so that OE would connect to the proxy on the Linux machine which would then connect to the real servers.Īnother thing is that in the STunnel download page I only see 64 bit versions so that would preclude installing it on the same WIN XP machine as that is 32 bit. That page says the only work-around is to install STunnel which is a proxy so that OE can connect to the proxy and the proxy can the connect to the email servers using the required TLS protocol. That is what I gather from this page and I would like to confirm I understood that right. If I understand the issue correctly the outlook/hotmail servers now require some kind on encryption that OE does not support. After some investigation it seems MS had changed the POP3 and SMTP servers and, crucially, the encryption scheme. ![]() Well, from yesterday my MS Hotmail accounts have stopped working with OE even though my GMail and other accounts are still working. I know it is old, outdated, deprecated, unwanted, unloved, despised, etc. I have been using MS Outlook Express as an email client for over 20 years now.
